Cambridge Golden Festival

On Saturday May 5th 2012 Look Street will be taking part in the Cambridge Union Society Golden Festival. We’ll have a stall at the Hanami Exhibition during the day where our dresses and handmade accessories will be available to try on and buy, and we’ll be showing our Spring/Summer 2012 Collection in the fashion show at the evening event too. We’re excited to be taking part in this fantastic charity event which will be raising funds for Aid For Japan, and to be exhibiting alongside so many fantastic artists and designers.

Ahead of the event, the fashion team from The Cambridge Tab shot a fashion editorial featuring Look Street dresses, vintage kimonos styled by Strawberry Kimono and Japanese street style clothing. We’re pleased to be able to share the photos with you just in time for the event!

Spring Summer Collection Preview Video

We just finished work on this little preview reel of our current collection. As an online fashion boutique, it is really important for us to give a realistic representation of how our dresses look and move. Online clothes shopping is somewhat an art, so the aim of our video collection is to allow you to imagine how the clothes might work with your body type and let you know what kind of fit to expect.

We shot this video on the leafy streets of Koenji, the very place where we were first inspired to start working on our our clothing line.

The soundtrack is by the wonderful Cornelia, whose song Aquarius Dreams struck a chord with us. Step in to our world. You can buy Aquarius Dreams and other tracks by Cornelia on iTunes.

Golden Festival Photoshoot

On Saturday May 5th 2012 Look Street will be taking part in the Cambridge Union Society Golden Festival. We’ll have a stall at the Hanami Exhibition during the day where our dresses and handmade accessories will be available to try on and buy, and we’ll be showing our Spring/Summer 2012 Collection in the fashion show at the evening event too. Ahead of the event, the fashion team from The Cambridge Tab shot a fashion editorial featuring Look Street dresses, vintage kimonos styled by Strawberry Kimono and Japanese street style clothing. I went along to the shoot and got to see the creative team at work! I can’t wait to see the finished article, but until then here are some behind-the-scenes snaps!

Styling team Eliska and Tom preparing the models for the shoot

The streets of Cambridge provided all kinds of interesting locations for the photo shoot.

I had the pleasure of watching Lyuba from Strawberry Kimono dress the models in kimono. It was very interesting to see all the layers, ties, and sashes involved.

The location for the Kimono shots was also very cool – I’m really looking forward to seeing the editorial.

I loved the combination of traditional and modern prints and accessories.

We’re really looking forward to the Golden Festival! Hope to see you there on Saturday 5th May.

Bethany Interviewed by the Fashion Journo

Bethany from Look Street

The Fashion Journo recently interviewed Bethany on Japan, design and the story of Look Street.

New fashion label Look Street shares Japanese fabrics with the world
POSTED ON MARCH 29, 2012

UK designer Bethany Éowyn Kelman is the creative mind behind the new label Look Street, and together with her Tokyo based brother Aleister, this duo is creating beautiful, feminine pieces with Japanese fabrics as their focus. TFJ had the chance to chat to Bethany about her life, how Look Street came about and the inspiration behind the latest collection.

Bethany studied Fine Art, specialising in Fibre Arts and spent her university years creating sculptural dresses from unusual materials. While always having a passion for creating her own clothing, it wasn’t until after she graduated university that her creative flair really kicked in.

Spring Summer 2012 Collection

Look Street Princess Dress

Since my trip to Japan in July last year my brother Aleister & I have been working on our new clothing label, Look Street. My designs are inspired by Japanese fabrics which we sourced in Tokyo last summer. The name ‘Look Street’ comes from a street in Koenji ルック 商店街 (Look Shoutengai), a district of Tokyo, which is full of gorgeous vintage clothes shops! After a lot of hard work our site is finally online, where you can browse and buy our designs for your very own. I’m so excited to finally be able to share my designs! ♥

This dress is possibly my favourite piece from our Spring/Summer 2012 collection. It is made from stunning cotton fabric from Japanese designer Kayo Horaguchi. The fabric features a delicate design with roses, birds, vintage sewing machines, mannequins, pocket watches, castles and ballerinas in teal on a black background. The dress is trimmed with beautiful Japanese cotton lace. It is also available in two other gorgeous Kayo Horaguchi prints, featuring carousel horses & rainbows, and tiny angel fish and sea foam flowers! It’s like stepping in to a grown up fairytale.

Look Street Sailor Dress

Of course the collection also includes some vintage inspired dresses! I fell in love with this Japanese playing card fabric and knew it would make awesome rockabilly style dresses. This design is also decorated with three black heart shaped vintage Lucite buttons on the front of the bodice. I found a precious untouched card of these vintage buttons at Judy’s Vintage Fair last year, I was saving them for something very special! ♥ This design is also available in two fabulous nautical prints, in red and navy. Ahoi Sailor! These are perfect for summer.

Look Street Fashion Empire Dress

When we were in Tokyo in July, lots of summer matsuri (fire work festivals) were happening, and it was not uncommon to see couples walking the streets dressed in traditional summer Yukata.  A Yukata is a spring or summer Kimono, traditionally worn to spring cherry blossom viewing festivals. The fabric is light and breathable and features beautiful blossom prints. I thought they would be perfect for spring and summer dresses. We picked out this beautiful teal & gold fabric, as well as cherry blossom fabric in pink & white and pink & black.

I was so inspired by the beautiful traditional kimono silks I saw in Japan. The quality of the silk is so luxurious and the prints are absolutely beautiful. This violet evening gown features a vibrant flowers and red guzei bridges on a striking background of purple, violet and indigo clouds. Silk evening gowns are also available in orange and peach.

I am very excited to finally be able to share my designs & I hope you like them! You can see the full collection at lookstreet.net and you can also follow us on Twitter @heylookstreet and Like us on Facebook. I have some exciting designs planned for Autumn/Winter already. ^-^
